TOPIC: PERSONAL MEDICINE FOR BUILDING STRENGTH & RESILIENCE

Free webinar

Are you worried that your recovery has been taken off track by the COVID-19 pandemic? Are you unable to keep up the activities that usually support your recovery? Are you left feeling isolated, bored or lacking in direction?

This workshop can teach you about activities and coping skills you can use to weather the crisis, using the Personal Medicine approach developed by Dr. Pat Deegan.

At 17 years old, Pat Deegan was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She took heavy doses of antipsychotic medications, but sank deeper and deeper into “chemical hibernation”. Recovery began when she revolted against the “prognosis of doom.” She decided, “I want to change the mental health system, so that no one ever gets hurt in it again.” She decided to do one good thing for herself each day, and eventually returned to school. She later became Dr. Pat Deegan--disability-rights advocate, psychologist and researcher.

Through her experience, she learned that pills have their benefits, but can’t do the work of recovery.

Personal Medicine is what we DO – not what we take--to get well and stay well. Personal Medicine can be activities such as going to school, work or a program to build one’s capabilities. Personal Medicine can also include self-care, such as showering daily to maintain a sense of structure, or going for a walk with a friend.

At this online TAG workshop, participants will be invited to share the personal medicine that keeps us grounded, and discuss how we can incorporate personal medicine to build resilience and stay on the track of recovery.

E. Chaya Weinstein, Ph/D., is a psychiatric occupational therapist and wellness coach. She works at NY-Presbyterian Hospital, and is in private practice. She is a Certified Personal Medicine Coach through Pat Deegan & Associates. <www.MentalHealthRecoveryOT.com
